From Accelerator Physics Center 09/02/2014V. Shiltsev | AD/APC All-Hands Meeting1

2007…Lab in search of Future  APC 09/02/2014V. Shiltsev | AD/APC All-Hands Meeting2 What’s after Tevatron? Dreams vs Reality US vs World’s program Accelerators vs Expt’s we

Steps we went thru in 7 years: 09/02/2014V. Shiltsev | AD/APC All-Hands Meeting3

We are set on near-future accelerator (thanks, P5!): 09/02/2014V. Shiltsev | AD/APC All-Hands Meeting4 PIP-II 1.2 MW

Our Story About The Tevatron Run II 09/02/2014V. Shiltsev | AD/APC All-Hands Meeting5 Available on Amazon.com

Impressive Results of Muon R&D @ MTA 09/02/2014V. Shiltsev | AD/APC All-Hands Meeting6 Mucool Test Area: High power RF 5 T solenoid 400 MeV p-Beam People!!! ~100 atm H2 filled RF Cavities - sustain x 2-3 Gradients in B=3 Tesla!

IOTA/ASTA : Our Main General Accelerator R&D Beam Facility 09/02/2014V. Shiltsev | AD/APC All-Hands Meeting7 IOTA operations start: 2018 (with protons) Partnerships Nat. labs: 7 U.S. universities: 6 International: 4 integrable beam optics and space charge compensationScience goal: Experimentally demonstrate novel techniques of integrable beam optics and space charge compensation, SRF research Technical challenge: fabrication high-precision nonlinear magnets; injector for delivery of pencil electron beam and high-current low energy proton beam, beam thru SRF CM FY14 highlights: Half of IOTA ring elements built and received as in-kind; electron injector and SRF cryomodule commissioned Unique R&D facility close to completion Unique R&D facility close to completion: IOTA ring, high-brightness photo-injector, ILC cryomodule, proton RQF ~90M$ investment by OHEP since 2006

9 over 2009-2014 PhD Degrees based on research at Fermilab : 9 over 2009-2014 Denise Ford 2013 Northwestern Timothy Maxwell 2012 Northern Illinois University Alexey Petrenko 2012 Budker Institute of Nuclear Physics Arun Saini 2012 University of Delhi W.-M. 9 New Challenge: WHAT’S AFTER PIP-II ? 09/02/2014V. Shiltsev | AD/APC All-Hands Meeting9 Short answer:Short answer: We do not know yet, but have several ideas to explore : –3-4 higher intensity rings (R&D at IOTA/ASTA) –3-4 times cheaper SRF Technology (TD) Those will enable multi-MW beams Those will enable multi-MW beams –need R&D on multi-MW targets (AD/APC) Don’t forget:Don’t forget: –Accelerator Science, Modeling & Training (APC) –High-field magnets and materials (TD)

We are back! 09/02/2014V. Shiltsev | AD/APC All-Hands Meeting10
