8 THE MISSION OF OTR PROGRAMS: CAS STANDARDS FOR ORIENTATION PROGRAMS (OP)  OP must facilitate the transition of new students into the institution; prepare students for the institution’s educational opportunities & student responsibilities; and initiate the integration of new students into the intellectual, cultural & social facets of the institution.  OP must collaborate with colleagues & departments across the institution to promote student learning & development, persistence & success.  OP must inform students about the institution’s history, traditions & culture to facilitate affinity & integration.  OP must reach out to reach out to relevant individuals, groups, communities & organizations internal & external to the institution to collaborate to assist in offering or improving programs & services to meet the needs of students & other constituents to achieve program & student outcomes.

9 THE MISSION OF UNIVERSITY ADVANCEMENT PROGRAMS CASE PRINCIPLES OF PRACTICE FOR ALUMNI RELATIONS  Alumni relations professionals lead strategic decisions & then perform roles serving their institutions & alumni including the following:  Championing the institution’s mission  Encouraging & fostering alumni involvement with their institutions  Building long-term relationships with alumni & other constituencies  Engaging with the research agenda  Critical collaboration includes partnerships with admissions, career services, athletics & student affairs.  Engagement Principles:  Inform: educate students about their future responsibilities & opportunities as alumni  Involve: involve students with alumni programs, services & events

11 THE MISSION OF UNIVERSITY ADVANCEMENT PROGRAMS: AIA/NACUBO PRINCIPLES OF COMMUNITY PARTNERING  Build relationships – don’t just “show up” at community meetings to brief those about events & issues on campus  Mutual benefit – give equal weight & attention to institutional & community goals  Local representation – community partnering needs to be done with the recognized community governance organizations, not just interested and/or active individuals  Neighborhood identity – recognition that each neighborhood is different & form multiple partnerships to pursue each unique common agenda  City relationships – resolve differences before going to the city
