2 Non-fiction Writing Process Ms. Whittemore – 6 th & 7 th ELA Writing a Narrative August 2014

3 The Writing Process  There are five steps to the writing process  These steps are in place to ensure that the writer can clarify their ideas to write  These steps include:  Pre-Writing  Drafting  Revising  Editing  Publishing/Presenting/Sharing/Celebrating

4 Phase 1 - Pre-Writing  In this phase writers:  Think  Observe  Choose a Topic  Collect research  Why am I writing?

5 Phase 2 - Drafting  In phase 2 writers:  Focus on what they want to say  Use their research to get facts  Include interesting words  Have a captivating beginning  Include a satisfying ending

6 Phase 3 - Revising  Here, writers:  Reread  Ask questions  “Does this make sense?”  “Is there enough detail?”  “Did I spell correctly?”  “Are details about the same topic grouped together?”  “Did I vary sentence beginnings?”  “Did I use interesting words?”

7 Phase 4 - Editing  Phase 4 is for writers to:  Focus on one thing at a time  Check writing for:  Spaces between words  Capital letters where appropriate  Spelling  Title  Neat handwriting  Periods, commas, exclamation points  Complete sentences

8 Phase 5 – Publishing/Presenting/Sharing/Celebrating  In this final phase, writers:  Show off their work!  Be proud of their accomplishment!  Read it to a friend!  Put it in the classroom library!  Hang it on their fridge!
