4 Tips of reading between the lines Presentation of the skill How ? 1. Make use of contextual clues, common sense and background knowledge 2. Connect ideas and draw conclusions from the reading text. 3. Form and test what you have understood between the lines.

5 Recently, I rushed into a Gap store to buy a pair of jeans. A salesperson asked if she could help. “I want a pair of jeans—32-28,” I said in haste. (Para. 1) Practice of the skill Read Text B and use its contextual clues, your common sense, and your background knowledge to answer the questions. Why did the author respond to the salesperson in haste? common sense Because he thought he could get the jeans he wanted right away.

6 Practice of the skill The jeans I chose were fine, but this simple transaction provoked a strong reaction in me. Buying a new pair of pants shouldn’t render someone a wreck! Purchasing jeans was once an easy choice; now it’s become a complex decision. (Para. 5) How did the author probably feel about this purchasing experience? contextual clues He must feel headache and become impatient in this simple transaction.

7 Read Text B and try to answer the questions between the paragraphs to see if you understand the author’s meaning the same way.
