Introduction Mission San Juan Capistrano was founded in October 1776 by Father Serra. It was used as a mission from 1776 – 1833.
4
Location Mission San Juan Capistrano is located off Highway 5, in the town of San Juan Capistrano.
5
Priest Father Serra was the president of the Alta California Mission chain at the time of the founding of Mission San Juan Capistrano. He was born on November 24, 1713 in Majorca, Spain. Serra became a Franciscan in 1737. He taught philosophy for 12 years, but believed so strongly in the Catholic faith that he became a missionary in order to teach others about it.

Native Americans The Acagchemem men constructed tools and weapons from natural resources such as rocks, and animal bones. The Acagchemem women made small villages, most of which were near a source of water. The Acagchemem villages were built around a central plaza. They made their homes in a cone shape by using a wooden form and lashing reeds and the children brush the top of it.
7
Daily Life Mission life was not always peaceful. There was often Acagchemem living at the mission. Not only were they forced to keep to strict classes and work, but they were also forbidden to leave the mission once they had come. Many of the Indians living at the mission were resentful of the missionaries’ control over their life.
8
Hardships Mission San Juan Capistrano and the other Alta California missions experienced many hardships. Some problems were caused by the differences between the Spanish and Indian cultures, while other difficulties were the result of disease, pirates, and natural disasters.
9
Conclusion As you can see Mission San Juan Capistrano is a beautiful mission and that’s why I chose it. This mission has wonderful history.
10
Interesting facts My interesting fact is that swallows come to the mission every spring to lay their eggs. Another interesting fact is that the mission was founded two times (1775 & 1776).
