The HP DeskJet F4280 is a printing device that can also scan documents to a computer or photocopy without the need of a pc The average cost of the printer is around £39.99 from Argos And the ink ranging from £12-£20 for black and £15-£25 for colour To cut costs and to lessen the amount of oil (which can fluctuate in price very rapidly) used to manufacture a product. The hp DeskJet cartridges now uses 30% more recycled material during its production.

The F4280 has been converted to use the Energy Star(R) adapters, which allows the devise to use less power when in use, or left on standby. This will cut down on the devices overall running costs as less energy is needed to run the device overall lowering the carbon emissions from power stations, which is adding to global warming. Hp believe that producing ink from recycled materials would not be able to replicate the high levels of printing that there customers are used to. They do collect used cartridges from western Europe and across the US (as shown in the map below) to be recycled into other products which has been proven to be as clean and efficient as reusing old cartridges into the devices themselves. Hewlett-Packard (n.d, Product reuse and recycling) Image 4

In 2007, HP as a whole recycled approximately 530,000 tonnes of hardware in Europe and the Americas. They also run a reuse scheme where old devices are refurbished and resold at a discounted price to companies or organisations These two factors combined generated £313,000,000 last year Hewlett-Packard (2008, Data dashboard) Image 5

89% of the total ink cartridges sold by HP last year were sent back to there recycling depot for processing. 53% of this was treated and melted down into new ink cartridge casings and components for the printer 21% was burnt under controlled conditions and the thermal energy was used for power generation and heating there buildings Hewlett-Packard (2008, Data dashboard)

With all these factors that have needed to be changed or limited during manufacture have increased the cost of the printer slightly so that HP can make up the costs of there recycling schemes. It is well established and the recycling techniques are becoming more efficient thus saving money. This will minimise the recycling cost further and pass this saving onto the user in the future.
