Info-Tech Research Group2 Follow this blueprint to create a plan for piloting an exit from endpoint management. Introduction IT professionals and leaders at any organization struggling to manage endpoints in an increasingly mobile, BYO world. CIOs, infrastructure managers, and application managers who can tie together disparate technology pieces into a cohesive plan. Staff currently responsible for provisioning, managing, and supporting endpoints. Decide if you will benefit from, and are ready for, getting out of the endpoint management game. Set goals for alternatives to traditional endpoint management. Develop an action plan for implementing a reduced endpoint management pilot program. Collect relevant information in a business case to communicate to key stakeholders. This Research Is Designed For:This Research Will Help You:

Info-Tech Research Group4 Executive Summary Like the frog in water that fails to get out as it slowly heats to boiling, many IT departments have stayed with the endpoint management status quo for too long. Trends like bring your own device (BYOD), cloud computing, consumerization, and mobility have turned up the heat, altering the state of endpoints, and thus their management. Traditional endpoint management needs to go; instead, focus on delivering applications and services to any device. Summarize your current endpoint management state to identify areas that need improvement—or elimination. Determine your readiness for exiting endpoint management. Most organizations can benefit from at least reduced management, but some can remain with the current state, at least temporarily. Set goals for getting out of the endpoint management game. Explore common alternatives such as virtual desktop infrastructure (VDI), enterprise mobility management (EMM), modernizing applications, and increased reliance on BYOD. Turn your goals into a practical action plan. Start with a pilot group, then evaluate success and plan for a larger implementation of your plan. Calculate the total cost of changing your endpoint management strategy. Reducing management can involve a large up-front investment, but often pays off after a year or two. Communicate your plan in a business case, and prepare IT and end users for the changes that are coming. Eliminating endpoint management can seem like a monumental task, but it can pay off. Use this blueprint to take some simple steps and get started.

Info-Tech Research Group7 Bring-Your-Own Whether IT likes it or not, users are bringing a variety of devices, apps, and networks with them, and they are using them for work. Corporate-Issued Endpoint management means choosing and owning endpoints. However, often the best tool for the job is one the user is comfortable with and has on hand. Solve the disconnect between modern technology and today’s endpoint management. Stop managing endpoints today. Traditional endpoint management has not caught up with today’s technology reality Today’s Technology Is:Traditional Endpoint Management Is: In the Cloud Popular consumer clouds have opened users’ eyes to the possibility of having their apps, services, and data follow them in the cloud, regardless of endpoint. On-Premise Productivity is limited if it can only occur when connected to certain networks. Tightly managed endpoints can have trouble being network-agnostic. Mobile Not only are endpoints themselves portable, but users expect, and benefit from, doing work from any location. Work is a thing workers do, not a place. Local Traditional endpoints are often tethered to a location. It prevents the benefits that come when work can be done from any location, using any endpoint. X X X

Info-Tech Research Group8 Why would you consider abandoning the comfort of traditional endpoint management? Because there are plenty of opportunities you can benefit from. See how many you can check off as plausible in your organization. List the opportunities that exiting endpoint management can realize Deliver applications, data, and services to any endpoint. Improved user productivity. Improved user satisfaction. Reduced time spent on menial tasks like hardware and operating system setup, patches, virus definitions, and app deployment on every endpoint you manage. Deal with BYOD without having to manage a massive set of endpoint devices. Relieve an understaffed, overworked IT department struggling to deal with a growing number of devices and platforms. Eliminate some of the hassle of managing constantly changing technology. Spend less time delivering new critical applications and services to users, and better software asset management. Maintain security without investing in an unnecessary level of control. Save money with reduced staff needs, overall simplification, and investing in technologies and processes that will serve the IT department long term. Future-proof your IT department by developing device and network agnostic solutions that will weather technological disruptions. Insert opportunities that apply to your organization into the Existing Issues and Opportunities section of Info-Tech’s Endpoint Management Exit Plan Pilot Business Case Template. Info-Tech Research Group9 Endpoint management is a bad pot to be in, and it will only get worse. The air outside is fine. Don’t be the frog in boiling water: investigate and test better alternatives then jump out of endpoint management Traditional endpoint management has slowly gotten more difficult and costly over the years, at least in comparison with alternatives. Like the frog in water that fails to get out as it slowly heats to boiling, many IT departments have stayed with the status quo and failed to investigate better options. Many users have already jumped out of the pot, preferring the cooler air of BYOD, consumer technology, and shadow IT. Many IT departments can safely jump out too. Technology such as desktop virtualization, application virtualization, the cloud, and enterprise mobility management can provide a hospitable environment outside of traditional endpoint management. Don’t Panic Follow the steps in this blueprint to review your current state, see how ready you are, sketch out some options, and then develop a small pilot program to test and demonstrate the viability of jumping out of endpoint management.

Info-Tech Research Group10 Stop worrying about endpoints by equipping IT to deliver applications and services to any endpoint In the early days of computing, mainframe computers were accessed by multiple terminals (later called thin clients). These endpoints were interchangeable and did not require much setup or management. When thin clients were able to do heavy computing on their own, they gained local operating systems, apps, and security features that needed to be carefully managed in-house to retain functionality. Now that users need multiple devices on multiple platforms, thin is back in. Ubiquitous internet connectivity ensures that any device can connect to resources from anywhere. Users benefit from a consistent experience from any device at any time, and IT benefits by not having to devote hands-on time to each individual endpoint. What’s old is new again Aim for IT as a utility Think of IT services as electricity and endpoints as light bulbs. If endpoints can be swapped in and out without any loss of functionality, there is less need to manage them. Not every client needs to be a thin client. The goal should be for IT to not care about the client’s weight. Whether it’s the latest employee- owned pocket supercomputer or a decade-old company desktop, users should be able to access what they need from it.
