Northeast Region Activating Strategy BeforeAfter The Appalachian Mountains are located in the Northeast Region of the Unites States. The Climate is very cold in the Northeast region all year long. New York City is the largest city in the Northeast Region Many tourist visit the Northeast Region each year to see the brightly covered fall leaves. Many states in the Northeast Region are located along the Atlantic Coast. The Appalachian Mountains are “newer” mountains.

Northeast Region Essential Questions 1) What are the geographical features of the Northeast Region and their effect on the natural resources and economy? 2) How has immigration to the Northeast influenced the cultural identity of that region?

Northeast Region Vocabulary 1) Region- a part of a country or the world that is different or separate from the other parts in some way. 2) migration- the movement from one place to another 3) Climate- the weather conditions of an area over a period of time

Northeast Region Vocabulary 4) Natural resources-materials or substances such as minerals, forests, water, and fertile land that occur in nature and can be used for economic gain. 5) culture- The sum of attitudes, customs, and beliefs that distinguishes one group of people from another. 6) Immigration- to move from one country to another

Northeast Region Land and Water 1) They are one of the oldest mountain ranges in the world. Over time, water, wind and ice have caused the rock of the mountains to break down. 2) As glaciers moved across the land, they wore down mountains, carved deep groves into the coastline and carried away most of the fertile soil.

Northeast Region Land and Water 3) The Erie Canal connects the Great Lakes with the Atlantic Ocean. Before it was built there was no waterway that crossed the Appalachian Mountains.

Northeast Region Climate 1) People have to cope with cold winters. Animals must adapt to all seasons for their food supply. Tress like maple and oaks drop their leaves each winter to survive the lack of water.

Northeast Region Climate 2) A northeaster is a kind of snowstorm that can bring over a foot of snow at one time.

Northeast Region Products and Natural Resources 1) Fruits, vegetables, blueberries, and potatoes. Cranberries are also produced in Massachusetts. 2) Fish farming- fish that are raised on farms to be sold for eating. 3) The power produced from running water made it possible to power mills and factories that helped the region grow in the industrial world.

Northeast Region Culture 1) The Amish do not use electricity or telephones in their homes. They also do not use cars or tractors. 2) Baked beans, potato chips, and buffalo wings were all invented in the Northeast region.
