2 4-H Afterschool Initiative What is 4-H Afterschool? 4-H, Cooperative Extension and community-based organizations working together to offer quality programming for school-aged youth during their out of school time. 3 4-H Afterschool Initiative South Dakota is a participating state in this national initiative National 4-H Council & CSREES, USDA Partial funding through the JCPenney Afterschool Fund Hours of Opportunity – March 2003 National Roll-out Conference – April 2003 South Dakota’s training for Youth Development/4-H Educators – Sept. 2003 South Dakota State University College of Agriculture & Biological Sciences Cooperative Extension Service

4 Goals of 4-H Afterschool Children and Youth To provide educational programs for youth not currently served by Extension To provide positive learning environments To promote youth leadership To increase children’s social skills Community Organizations To form partnerships with the directors and staff of existing after school programs To provide training on positive youth development principles for after school staff and volunteers South Dakota State University College of Agriculture & Biological Sciences Cooperative Extension Service

5 Role of Youth Development/ 4-H Educators YD/4-H Educators are currently: Providing youth development training, curriculum resources, and technical assistance to staff Serving on boards of after school programs Assisting in writing grant proposals Recruiting teen and adult volunteers South Dakota State University College of Agriculture & Biological Sciences Cooperative Extension Service

6 After School Environment National Afterschool Association (NAA) Standards for Quality School-Age Care Nine Critical Elements identified by 4-H 1. Positive relationship with a caring adults 2. Safe environment, physically & emotionally 3. Opportunity to master skills & content 4. 8 4-H Afterschool Collaborations Educators met with representatives of 60+ after school programs and established partnerships with more than half of these programs/locations, which resulted in the formation of 40 4-H Afterschool clubs Ongoing collaboration with Sisseton- Wahpeton Extension Coordinator South Dakota State University College of Agriculture & Biological Sciences Cooperative Extension Service

11 Example of One-Hour Session Youth arrive after school and check-in If nice weather, youth go outside and play organized game for 10 minutes Nutritious snacks available Bring meeting to order, recite pledges Begin learning activity, e.g., investigate different types of vegetable seeds Create an artistic collage, using a variety of seeds and other media South Dakota State University College of Agriculture & Biological Sciences Cooperative Extension Service

12 South Dakota 4-H Afterschool 2003-04 In May 2004, YD/4-H Educators reported: Formation of 40 4-H Afterschool groups/clubs Membership of 995 youth in 4-H Afterschool Participation of 65 after-school staff members Participation of 67 teen and adult volunteers South Dakota State University College of Agriculture & Biological Sciences Cooperative Extension Service

13 4-H Afterschool Resources USDA grant partially funded state-wide Educator training and curricula resources JCPenney Afterschool Fund partially funded train-the-trainer roll-out conference South Dakota received one of 15 grants from JCPenney Afterschool Fund to develop 4-H Afterschool in Roberts County in cooperation with Sisseton-Wahpeton Community College, a 1994 institution.
