5 Location “Where is it?” Everything on earth has its own LOCATION – the place where it can be found ABSOLUTE V. RELATIVE

6 Examples of Location  Absolute:  Mr. Fischer’s classroom is room 18.  Address  Longitude & Latitude  BINGO or Battleship  Relative:  SWS is behind Burger King  Mr. Fischer’s classroom is next to the “Old Man’s” What is Pi?

7 Place “What is it like there?” Every place has physical and human characteristics, or features, that make it different from all other places. Physical features are formed by nature. Human features are created by people.

9 Human-Environment Interactions “How are the lives there shaped?” People and their surroundings interact, or affect each other. People’s activities may modify, or change, the environment. The environment may affect people, requiring them to adapt, or adjust, to their surroundings.

10 Human-Environment Interaction Examples  Air-conditioning in the summer  Heat in the winter  Roads  Bridges  Shoveling snow  Jones Beach  Warm clothes in the winter/cool clothes in the summer.

11 Regions “How is this place like other places?” Areas of Earth with main features that make them different from other areas are called regions. A region can be described by its physical features or its human features.

12 Examples of Regions  The Southwest  The West  The Northeast  The Midwest  The Southeast  The Tri-State area  New England

13 Movement “How do people ideas and goods move to and from this place?” Every day, people in different states and countries exchange products and ideas.

14 Examples of Movement Trading sugar cane from the Bahamas to Virginia. The U.S. Post Office Sending an email or text message. Making a telephone call.
