2. Introduction~ Over 2,000 years ago, three ancient civilizations established themselves in Central and South America. These civilizations were the Aztec, the Inca, and the Maya. The Aztec were located near Mexico City. The Maya were located in Southern Mexico, Guatemala, El Salvador, Honduras, and Belize. Finally, the Inca were stationed in Bolivia, Chile, Peru, Ecuador, and Argentina. Today, we will be talking about the Mayan civilization.

Disease Information ●Came from Europe when the Spanish conquistadors came. ● Lymphatic Body System- lymphocytes get infected. ●Disease spreads from Lymphocytes to Lymph nodes infecting them. ●Lymph nodes- Swell and show externally ●Respiratory System- Lungs get clogged ●Integumentary System- Swollen bumps shown on skin. 8. Disease Information ●Body- Affected internally and externally. ●Spread by injection into the bloodstream. Have to bitten. ●Started because fleas created it. Fleas to rats. Rats to humans. Sometimes fleas to humans. ●Origin- China ●Most Common- London ●It is bacterial.

9. Disease Information 2 ●Symptoms- Chills, cramps, color-changing skin, and high fever. ●The whole body is affected. ●Common Back Then- No medications and prevention methods we have now. ●Rare Today- We now have medications and healthy habits. ●It first started in the 1348-1350

10. Disease Percentages ●Mortality Rate- Started 66%, now 11% ●Survival Rate- Used to be 34%, is now 89%. ●Catching- 30% - 60% ●40% of the people died from the bubonic plague.

11. BIG QUESTION How did the Ancient Civilizations interact with other organisms in the physical environment to live (i.e. how did they get their energy)? Look at the ecosystem, scientific, economic (money), political and social justifications. Interacting with other organisms- Signs/Signals, Sacrifices, and rarely as pets. Animal could bite the human and transmit the disease when doing one of those things. Energy- The Mayans got their energy from food but this wasn’t why they got the disease. Ecosystem, Social Justifications- The civilization was made up of city-states. Each city-state had a ruler. The Mayans used cacao beans and corn as money. Large civilization with a big population so this system benefited the Mayans.

Affects on people ●About 200 million people affected back then. ●Someone close affected- Move away a.s.a.p. - Today and back then. ●Effects today- still affects- not as much- we have medicines and helpful health habits. ●Farmers affected most back then. ●Reaction- Fear ●Population- Less than it would have been,

Medication and Prevention ●Many beliefs on getting rid of it. ●Methods: Ate ground powder of Jade stone, drank rotten treacle, rubber in ears, and used Aromatherapy. ●Families with the Bubonic Plague prayed to gods. ●Treatments: Antibiotics such as gentamicin, streptomycin, or doxycycline. ●Actual Preventions: Keep everything clean, wash clothing, move away from people who have it. How does the Past Influence the Present? ●Past- They had no medications, or true preventions and healthy habits. ●Influence- Inspired us to make medicine and figure out preventions and healthy habits. ●Present- We now have medicines to help, and preventions and healthy habits that work. ●Healthy Habits- Kitchen and household cleanliness ●Preventions- Rat poison and bug spray

15. Fun Fact: * Ring around the Rosie is about the Bubonic Plague. Ring around the rosie- Called Swollen Bumps rosies. Pocket full of posies- Put posies in pockets if they had it. Ashes, Ashes- They burned the dead bodies. We all fall down- Almost the whole civilization was wiped out. Would you have still sang this song if you knew what it meant?

16. Conclusion~ Remember, always keep your house clean, and don’t leave rotten or used food lying around. Also, use rat poison and bug spray to prevent rats and fleas from living in your home. Finally, make yourself a healthier person so you are less likely to get the Bubonic Plague.
