Insect Anatomy
3
Have a hard exoskeleton that protects internal organs – Must shed it to grow
4
Mouthparts Determines the order of the insect Determines the damage it will inflict on a plant 4 Most Common Types: – 1. Piercing- sucking – 2. Chewing – 3. Siphoning – 4. Sponging
5
Pierce and Suck Mouth form a tube which is inserted into food source food may be plant, insect,
6
Chewing Mouth Have large mandibles (jaws) on each side that move from side to side – Often have noticeable, finger-like palps on each side of the mouth
7
Siphoning Mouth Long, straw like structure that sucks nectar from flowers
8
Sponging Mouth Release digestive enzymes from mouth which liquefies the food source and they suck it up through the sponge like mouthpart
9
Metamorphosis Metamorphosis= how the insect grows/changes form -Ametabolous= no metamorphosis, look the same as larva and adults, just get bigger
