Contents PPresent (2015) TThe future (2050?) RRecycling is important... MMore about recycling... TThings you didn’t know you could recycle HHow things are recycled

Present (2015) Recycling isn’t just making a couple of pieces of cardboard into a model. Or putting your litter in the bin. Although these things help; people really need to do more. Some people fix a green cone into their garden or even make their own compost heap! Cities now (2015) Relaxing and comfortable...

The future (2050?) In the future (if we don’t recycle) the whole world could end up polluted: making it hard to breathe. If we don’t recycle AT ALL the world could look like this. Here the Sun is barely visible through the thick pollution. Coughing and spluttering, this could be YOUR city if YOU don’t do something.

Recycling is important... What actually is recycling? Recycling is the process of making used items –that have already served its purpose- into a new thing/item. Reduce, Reuse, Recycle sign (made out of tin can tops). Most of the time all of our rubbish is dumped off at a landfill site to disintegrate. What ever it is, even if it can be recycled, is dumped there. That’s why YOU need to help.

More about recycling... and why its so important for our planet. Recycling helps extend the life of many things. If things aren’t recycled they get dumped on a massive landfill site where everything is left to disintegrate. Things like plastic take millions of millions of years to break down; but while that is happening, the gases produced by it are dangerous and then pollute the air. Landfill- site

Things you didn’t know you could recycle! WWater filters: quite often these are turned into toothbrushes. HHair dryers: everyone knows that these don’t last forever! But when they do run out of their energy; did you know that you can actually recycle them! MMobile phones: if your phone still works then it may be sent all the way to Africa- where newer brands aren’t available. If not it will get turned into a new phone GGym/running shoes: some companies like Nike recycle old shoes by using the old material for new shoes.

How things are recycled. How aluminium is recycled: First of all the person who has used the aluminium (the consumer) throws it away into a recycling bin. The aluminium is then collected and taken all the way to a treatment works. During their time in the treatment plant: the cans are cleaned and rinsed, ready for reprocessing. Then it gets melted down into molten aluminium to remove all the coatings and ink marks. Next the aluminium gets made into big blocks called ingots. The ingots are sent to mills where they are are rolled out to give it the flexibility it needs. All of this is then made into cans, wrappers or ready meal packaging or even a tin can. Finally the recycled aluminium is sent to lots of different supermarkets
