Movement The Fourth Theme of Geography
2
Definition How people, goods, and ideas move between places; spatial interaction.
3
Moves (Like Jagger) Relationships between people in different places are shaped by the constant movement of people, ideas, materials, and physical systems such as wind. Our world is in constant motion, constantly changing. Like blood flowing through our bodies, movement brings life to a place. When considering the theme of movement as a way to study geography, geographers typically ask these five W questions: who, what, when, where and why do things, people and information move?
4
(Bust a) Move You should be able to recognize where resources are located, who needs them, and how they are transported over the earth’s surface. The theme of movement helps you understand how you are connected with, and dependent upon, other regions, cultures, and people in the world.
5
Movers (and Shakers) Movement is important to the study of geography because it contributes to the development of the human characteristics of a place, such as cultural traits, governmental practices and tolerance of diversity. Why do people move? Think about the pioneers heading West on the Oregon Trail. http://schoolmediainteractive.com/view/object/ clip/F7A137F34FDE4C7DBB38CA867550213B/03 http://schoolmediainteractive.com/view/object/ clip/F7A137F34FDE4C7DBB38CA867550213B/03 Some other reasons: for work, to be close to family, to escape war or religion persecution.
6
(All the Right) Moves Geographers also study how products and resources are transported from one region or place to another. This includes manufactured products, crops, and oil. For example, a tractor-trailer delivering oranges from Florida to New York, or a boat delivering a shipment of coffee from Africa to Europe.
7
Move (on up) In addition, geographers study the movement of ideas. With the advent of technology, such as the phone and Internet, ideas like fashion, fads, music and philosophical ideologies are exchanged rapidly from all areas of the globe. Languages also evolve and change based on influence from outside ideas and other languages.
8
(Make Your) Move Now it’s your turn to be a geographer. With a partner, complete the five activity sheets related to the theme of movement. Whatever you don’t finish in class is homework and due the next day in class.
