12 TH GRADE2/23/15 PG#5 THESIS Aim: How can I begin to formulate a thesis for my research paper? Do Now: What are some difficulties that you have while writing a thesis?

SAMPLE THESIS WITH EXAMPLE OUTLINE How do movies create stereotypes? Although movies are created for entertainment purposes, they still instill harsh stereotypes within its viewers. The movie industry is nothing short of a brainwashing mechanism that allows viewers to view individuals in a certain negative light for the purpose of steering perspective and creating bias. My Arguments Example 1: Asians are depicted as Samurai-sword fighting Orientals. Example 2: Muslims and Arabs are depicted as terrorists. Example 3: Blacks and Hispanics are categorized under gang-affiliated groups (drugs, violence, etc.) Example 4: Americans are depicted as heroes.

ON PAGE 5….PEER WORK Team up with 3 people. After writing your thesis statement, share it with your group members. Each member should answer the following on the student’s paper: What is one strength that this thesis has? What is one weakness that this thesis has? How can they strengthen this thesis? After you are finished, get a check with me for a classwork grade. You must have a revised thesis statement and at least 2 peers check your thesis (with questions) in order to get full classwork grade. HOMEWORK: READ CHAPTER 5 BY TOMORROW

PRESENTATIONS Procedure: Step 1: Team up with a person on the opposition. (Ex: If you are Ralph, find a Jack and vice versa.) Step 2: Choose a dialogue from the sheet provided to you by your teacher. Step 3: You and your partner (Jack and Ralph) will then re-write the conversation using Jack and Ralph’s voice and characterization. Step 4: Write the conversation on loose-leaf (one per team). Be sure to change the names. You may also change up the content in order to fit Jack and Ralph’s characterization.

What’s starting to happen to Ralph that makes him a dynamic character? Give a description (physical and personality traits) of Sam and Eric. What does the name “Samneric” tell you about how the other boys on the island see them?

PROJECT In groups of 3, you will: Create a presentation (poster, ppt, slideshow, video, etc.) connecting Lord of the Flies and “The Most Dangerous Game” to a common theme (message). Include pictures/clips Music that represents both texts (esp. lyrics) Textual evidence linking the common theme to both texts An explanation for the theme and how it is relevant to the outside world.
