Project initiated with support from Gates foundation by London School of Hygiene & Tropical medicine – to research options for increasing life of a pit latrine
Various options ranging from chemical methods to bio-additives studied
The tiger toilet shortlisted – lab tested for two years
Trials in different Geographical locations/contexts
Uganda: Urban slum
Myanmar: Humanitarian camp
India: Rural

6. The concept
In nature the Soil ecosystem is the most efficient system for decomposing organic matter
The Tiger Toilet
Creates a complete ecosystem in the pit which digests the waste rapidly
Uses natures bio-degradation system by providing a complete soil food chain
Maintains completely aerobic environment -no odour

9. Results The decomposition of waste is very rapid
Aerobic conditions are maintained – no odor or flies
Reduction in COD and TSS
The rate of pit filling is very slow – and the accumulation is that of vermi compost

11. Pilot project
The tiger technology has recently won an award from ‘ Grand Challenges – Canada’ to develop ‘Bold ideas’ to make an impact on public health
Part funds available for executing 500 toilets with tiger technology
Objective is to develop a business blueprint to expand the use of this technology
