The Effects of Smoking By http://2stopsmokingtips.com
2
Introduction There are many effects of smoking but this presentation deals with a few of them. There is no doubt about the fact that smoking is harmful. It affects every aspect of our lives; be it physical, fetal and mental health, environment, finances and many others too numerous to mention.
3
Short Term Effects of Smoking Every puff of cigarette contains a mixture of nicotine and carbon monoxide and each time you smoke, it temporarily increases your 1. Heart rate and 2. Blood pressure. 3. It also injures your heart and blood vessels.
4
Long term effects of smoking Loss of Appetite Yellowing of teeth Yellowing of facial hair Halitosis (bad breath) Lung cancer Other cancers of the mouth and throat
5
Long term effects of smoking(2) Heart disease Memory Loss with the passage of time Premature Aging Premature death Low Sperm Count Emphysema COPD Wrinkles
6
Let’s examine a few of these effects in detail: COPD: A lot of people think lung cancer is the biggest issue when it comes to the effects of smoking but COPD is more rampant (and poorer in diagnosis). But then, what is COPD? Wikipedia says, Wikipedia COPD stands for Chronic obstructive Pulmonary Disease and “is the co-occurrence of chronic bronchitis and emphysema, a pair of commonly co-existing diseases of the lungs in which the airways become narrowed. This leads to a limitation of the flow of air to and from the lungs, causing shortness of breath.” Simply put,COPD patients find it hard to breathe.
7
Lung Cancer A research conducted in the UK identified “Smoking as the single biggest cause of cancer in the world, and accounts for one in four UK cancer deaths. In the UK, smoking kills five times more people than road accidents, overdoses, murder, suicide and HIV all put together.” This is really startling and your jaw begins to drop when you learn that the situation is no different in the US. research

Lung Cancer(2) According to the American Cancer Society, tobacco use is responsible for nearly 1 in 5 deaths in the United States; this equaled about 443,000 early deaths each year from 2000 to 2004. (Source: Cancer Facts & Figures 2011).American Cancer Society
9
Lung Cancer(3) The world over, Lung Cancer is said to be the second most common cancer with low survival rates and it is strongly linked to smoking. If you contact Lung cancer from smoking, just know that it is as a result of the tar in tobacco smoke. Men and women who smoke are ten times more likely to die from lung cancer than non-smokers.
10
Premature Aging Smokers tend to age quickly even though they may not be advanced in years.Their face says it all.Full of wrinkles and lacking in shine. This is because every puff of cigarette smoke you inhale diminishes the skin’s oxygen supply by reducing circulation. Not only that. Collagen, the fibrous protein responsible for producing new, healthy skin,is greatly reduced while the water content of the skin also drops significantly. This is what leads to a smoker’s sagging and ugly skin.
11
Low Sperm Count Men who smoke may have a lower sperm count than do those who don’t smoke. Additionally, smokers tend to have lower sex drives and less frequent sex, according to the American Society for Reproductive Medicine and the Canadian Fertility Society. American Society for Reproductive Medicine and the Canadian Fertility Society.
12
Low Sperm Count(2) On the average, smokers had sex only half the times compared to non-smokers and sex was less gratifying. The semen of non-smokers was superior to that of smokers both in terms of sperm viability and longevity as the toxins from nicotine weakens sperm count, sperm motility, reduces sperm lifespan, and may cause genetic changes that put the child at risk. Secondhand smoke may also affect male fertility.
13
Female Infertility Unknown to most people, smoking can affect both female and male fertility. There are numerous ways that smoking can affect female fertility. Some studies suggest that smoking reduces the amount of estrogen that a woman’s body produces. Estrogen is the main sex hormone in women. It is responsible for the menstruation and reproduction in women.
14
Female Infertility(2) Additionally, smoking may cause a reduction of blood flow to the genital organs, which can cause dryness of the vagina and other sexual issues. On a final note, some studies have arrived at the fact that smoking may even negatively affect the ability of an embryo to implant in the uterus.
15
Heart Disease Smokers tend to suffer from heart disease and strokes. This is because smoking causes fat deposits to constrict and block blood vessels which leads to heart attack. Statistics have it that smoking causes around two in five deaths from heart disease. In younger people, two out of four deaths from heart disease are due to cigarette smoking.
16
The effects of smoking to the environment The damage that smoking does to the environment is unquantifiable.According to “Tobacco and the Environment”, an Action on Smoking and Health(ASH) fact sheet,”Smoking releases about 2.6 billion kilograms of carbon dioxide in the air worldwide every year. It also releases about 5.2 billion kilograms of methane every year.”Action on Smoking and Health(ASH)
17
The effects of smoking to the environment(2) However the worst damage to the environment is caused by the emissions from production, packaging, transport and disposal of the cigarette packages. Not to mention deforestation because cigarette papers require one tree for every 300 cigarettes, which quickly adds up considering their global demand.
18
Effects of smoking during pregnancy Smoking during pregnancy can be likened to putting a cigarette in your baby’s mouth. This is because babies take in over 70% of what you take in, including what you breathe. Therefore, cigarette smoking during pregnancy increases the risk of low birth weight, premature birth, spontaneous abortion, and perinatal mortality in humans, which has been referred to as the fetal tobacco syndrome. It has even been linked to learning disabilities in children whose parents smoked when they were in the womb.
19
Social effects of smoking Apart from the high cost of cigarettes, smelly clothes and breath, smoking affects both the smoker(who can no longer socialize well) as well as the society. Second-hand smoke from your cigarettes is also a serious danger to children, family, and friends.
