Forms of Fiction: -Myths Involves gods and other superhuman beings Probably first stories ever told. Myths were used to “shape” the world Most are connected with a culture’s religious beliefs Early stories passed down orally Greek mythos = “story” Not all myths are from Greece or Rome. Used to answer questions that science answers today.

Myths answer other questions Who are we? Where are we going? How should we live? What is courage? What is love? Who are our heroes? What is the difference between right and wrong?

Forms of Fiction -Legends Have historical basis and have been passed down from generation to generation Example: Trojan War story May become less accurate and more exaggerated as retold Heroes become more superhuman Villains become more villainous

Forms of Fiction -Folk Tales An entertaining or meaningful story that does not involve gods or religious beliefs and is passed down from one generation to the next. Examples are stories that involve genies, princesses, elves, giants, magic carpets, etc. Many cultures may have their own version of the same folk tale. Ex. Cinderella.

Type #1-Adventure Exciting Contains plot, setting and conflict involving the outdoors

Type #2- Romance Usually involves two main characters that meet and fall in love. Complications make up the plot

Type #3- Mystery Revolves around a central crime Usually contains at least two important characters: The person who commits the crime The person who solves the crime

Type #4-Historical Fiction Brings real people and events to a made-up plot involving fictional characters.

Type #5-Realistic Fiction Tells about things that can and do happen in real life.

Last slide All historical fiction is realistic fiction. All realistic fiction does not have to be historical fiction.
