Nurse Practitioner Reimbursement SWOT Analysis Jennifer Mondillo MBA,MSN,ANP-BC Summer I 2013 Dr. Krouse
2
Introduction Nurse Practitioner (NP) reimbursement was transitioned to the forefront of healthcare by the Balanced Budget Act of 1997. NP reimbursement is currently at 85% of the cost of the care provided. NP reimbursement and autonomy continue to be a debate and discussion among health care leaders and physician groups overall. NPs will continue to grow as a a major partner on the future of healthcare. Providing quality, affordable care to the patients of tomorrow.
3
Strengths Advanced practice nurses at lower costs to practice Quality of work Reputable Communication and caring are priorities for nurses Committed employees as they functioned as RNs prior to NP role
4
Weaknesses Lower reimbursement (85%) of the care Need to have MD collaboration Generational concerns with NP providing care versus MD
5
Opportunities Increase patient visits, therefore increasing revenue. Patient satisfaction as noted in the research Shortages of MDs leave opportunities for NPs Affordable Care Act (ACA) will effect how we care for our patients and patient visits will increase with the influx of newly insured patients.
6
Threats Continual changes in regulatory compliance Patient satisfaction with NP/MD sharing of responsibilities. The elderly usually look towards a doctor, but the NP can function in the same capacity.
7
Conclusion NP Reimbursement continues to be a major discussion among law makers. The ACA and IOM are preparing for an influx of patients and NP are on the forefront to help care for all of them. NP Reimbursement continues to pay at 85% of the total cost of care, but that may change as we enter the era of the Affordable Care Act and changes in reimbursement overall.
