Building the Background Who is Nelson Mandela? After reading the information on page 439 and 450 in your text and reading the background from the Nobel Prize website, explain in your own words why Nelson Mandela is an important historical figure.

Understanding Literary Elements TermExample from textPurpose Metaphor “a rainbow nation at peace with itself and the world” (pg.447). By comparing the races to a rainbow he creates an image of unity and peacefulness. He is encouraging all of the people of South Africa to come together as one and maintain the peace. Anaphora“Let there be justice for all. Let there be peace for all. Let there be work, bread, water and salt for all” (pg.447). By repeating the structure and phrase he emphasizes that the country’s dreams have come true and it is time for justice, peace, and prosperity for all. Find an example for each of the following literary terms. Explain the purpose for each figurative language or rhetorical device.

Thinking Critically 1. In the first part of the speech how does Mandela make an emotional appeal to his audience? 2. Why does Mandela use the pronoun “we”? What is his purpose? 3. Who is Mandela’s audience? 4. What gives Mandela hope for the future?

Rhetorical Précis Write a rhetorical précis. You may use the summary frame, but it would be better if you started to write the précis using your own words. Remember all of the parts: purpose, theme, evidence (content), audience and persona/tone.
