Plural vs. Singular When we talk about singular and plural, we are talking about only certain words. These words are nouns (persons, places, things, and ideas). You learned very early on that when you asked for something you wanted a lot of (cookies) you needed to add an “s” to that thing you wanted. Singular: desk Plural: desks

Exception to the rule… Nouns that end in s,x,z,ch or sh need an “es” to make plural. Singular Plural pass passes fox foxes hatch hatches dish dishes

Yet another exception to the rule… Some nouns that end in “f” or “fe” are made plural by changing the “f” to a “v” and adding “s” or “es” Singular Plural belief beliefs shelf shelves knife knives wolf wolves

And another exception… Some nouns are considered irregular, so they look very different when they change from singular to plural. Singular Plural child children woman women man men tooth teeth

The Possessive Case The possessive case of a word shows ownership or relationship. Rules: singular nouns (boy) need only an apostrophe (‘) and an “s” to for the possessive boy (boy’s). Singular nouns that end in “s” (Thomas) need only an apostrophe to form the possessive (Thomas’) Plural nouns that end in “s” (boys) need only an apostrophe to form the possessive (boys’) Plural nouns that do not end in “s” (children, mice, women) need both an apostrophe and an “s” to form the possessive (children’s, mice’s, women’s).
