What is Fitness? In groups- try and define what fitness is? Think about your own fitness- what is it?

Definition: Fitness- is the ability to meet the demands of the environment. There are two types of fitness: GENERAL/ HEALTH RELATED SPECIFIC/SKILL RELATED

Stamina/endurance/Cardiovascular fitness: the ability to exercise the body for long periods of time without getting tired Examples: jogging, marathon, aerobics Muscular Endurance: the ability for muscles to repeat and maintain contractions without getting tired. Example: stacking shelves all day

Strength: this is the force muscles exert against a resistance Example: need strength to do push ups, carry a suitcase Flexibility: the range of motion at a joint Example: if you can touch your toes when bending Down Body Composition: the percentage of body weight which s fat, muscle and bone Example: If we have too much fat or excess weight we put a strain on our vital organs.

Power or Explosive Strength: the ability to do strength performances quickly Agility: the ability to change the body’s position and direction quickly Example: dodging opponents in a game situation Co-ordination: the ability to move two body parts together Example: Returning a serve in tennis/badminton

Balance: the ability to hold a posture without wobbling or falling over Example: to stand on one leg Reaction: the time it takes you to respond to a stimulus Example: starting a race from a pistol gun. Speed: the movement performed by a person over a distance in a short space of time. Example: Running for a long jump
