5 Understanding Computer Language 1. ROM is memory that is capable of holding data and being read from; however, it is not capable of being written to or having its data modified. 2. RAM, also known as main memory or system memory, is a term commonly used to describe the memory within a computer. Unlike ROM, RAM is a volatile memory and requires power; if power is lost, all data is also lost. 3. The BIOS or System BIOS is a chip located on all computer motherboards that contains instructions and setup for how your system should boot and how it operates. 4. The computer CPU is responsible for handling all instructions and calculation it receives from other hardware components in the computer and software programs running on the computer. 5. CMOS is an on-board semiconductor chip powered by a CMOS battery inside computers that stores information such as the system time and date and the system hardware settings for your computer 6. Short for power-on self-test, the POST is a test the computer must complete to verify all hardware is working properly before starting the remainder of the boot process. If the computer passes the POST the computer will often return a single beep and if unsuccessful will create a beep code that indicates the error. 7. The MBR is the first sector of the computer hard disk drive that tells the computer how to load the operating system, how the hard drive is partitioned, and how to load the operating system(s). 8. An input/output device is a hardware device that accepts inputted information and also has the capability of outputting that information ACRONYMS Find the meaning and write a definition in your own words to the following ACRONYMS:
