Chemical Formulas Chemical formulas use chemical symbols to tell us the numbers and types of atoms in a molecule or compound. For example, in the compound H 2 CO 3, there are __ hydrogen atoms, __ carbon atom, and ___ oxygen atoms. Instead of writing this compound as HHCOOO, we can use numbers to show how many atoms of each element are in the compound.
2
Other Examples… H 2 O- 2 ___ atoms and 1 ___ atom CO 2 - ___ “C” atom and ____ “O” atoms
3
Other Examples… 2H 2 O- in this case, we have to take the number at the front of the formula times each of the elements in the compound. This means there are 2 x “H 2 ” or ___ “H” atoms total in the compound and 2 x “0” or ___ “O” atoms in this compound.
4
Other Examples… Sr(OH) 2 - in this case, the subscript “2” applies only to the elements in parentheses. So, in this compound there is ___ “Sr” atom, ___ “O” atoms and ___ “H” atoms.
