9.1 PERIMETER AND AREA OF PARALLELOGRAMS Objective: Students find the perimeter and area of parallelograms.
2
VOCABULARY Perimeter- is the distance around a polygon. Area- is the number of unit squares needed to cover the figure. Base- is the length of one side Height- is the perpendicular distance from the base to the opposite side. Composite figure- is made up of basic geometric shapes such as rectangles, triangles, trapezoids, and circles.
3
Perimeter of a Parallelogram WordsFormulaNumbers The perimeter P of a parallelogram is the sum of twice its width w and its length ℓ. P = 2w + 2 ℓ P = 2(3) + 2(5)= 16 5 3 PERIMETER
4
EXAMPLE 1 Find the perimeter of each figure. A. 6 cm. 4 cm. P = 2w + 2 ℓ P = 2(4) + 2 (6) P = 8 + 12 = 20 cm P = 2w + 2 ℓ P = 2(5) + 2 (7) P = 10 + 14 = 24 ft B. 5 ft. 7 ft.
5
AREA Area of Rectangles and Parallelograms WordsFormulaNumbers The area A of a rectangle or parallelogram is the base length b times the height h. A = b ∙ h
6
EXAMPLE 2 Graph and find the area of each figure with the given vertices. (-3.-2), (3,-2), (3,1), (-3,1)A. (-4.-4), (1,-4), (3,0), (-2,0)B.
7
EXAMPLE 3 Find the perimeter and area of the figure. 2m 4m 5m 3m 1m Area- A = b ∙ h Perimeter- The length of the side that is not labeled is the same as the length of the opposite side, 2cm.
