2. T HE SHIELD HAD MANY USES FOR THE KNIGHT AND WAS USED FOR MORE THAN JUST PROTECTION. T HE SHIELD WAS USED TO IDENTIFY EACH OTHER DURING JOUSTS OR IN TIME OF COMBAT T HE KNIGHT WOULD HAVE HIS VISOR DOWN AND BECAUSE OF THIS THEY COULD NOT TELL WHO THEY WERE FIGHTING. T HE SHIELD GAVE THE KNIGHTS A WAY TO KNOW WHO WAS IN THE ARMOR ACROSS FROM THEM.

3. Everything about the shield had a meaning or a purpose. Even the shape of the shield was meant to either help a knight fight or protect. Kite shields - The kite shields were featured in the Bayeux tapestry. Rounded at the top of the shield and tapered at the bottom providing body cover as chain mail was the only protection in the early Middle Ages

4. U SUALLY USED AS A JOUSTING SHIELD. S MALLER AND EASIER TO CARRY, T HESE SHIELDS MADE MOVING AROUND ON HORSEBACK EASIER AND STILL GAVE PROTECTION.

5. T HE B UCKLER - T HE B UCKLER WAS A SMALL ROUND, METAL SHIELD WHICH COULD BE HUNG FROM A BELT. T HIS TYPE OF SHIELD WAS RESERVED FOR HAND - TO - HAND COMBAT T HE BUCKLER COULD BE USED TO BLOCK A STRIKE FROM ANOTHER AS WELL AS A WEAPON TO STRIKE / HIT THE ENEMY

6. PAVISE SHIELD The Pavise ( Wall Shields) - The Pavise was the shield used by Crossbow men. This type of tall shield provided protection when reloading his crossbow.

7. Targe Shield This is the traditional round shield used by the clans/families in Scotland

8. the 'bouche' which was designed to be used with the lance Bouche

9. Time to design a shield. Remember everything has To have meaning. Pick a shape, pick a color, Choose a design. Choose the colors based on Your group. Make wise Choices. The picture on the shield Should represent all of the Members in the group. Not everyone in the group Will have the same attributes. You will need to use more Than one color and picture. Red-Passion, strong will to survive, will take action Anger, hatred, revenge. Suns-Celestial goodness noble person Wolf-Strength, intelligence Courage.

10. W ORK IN GROUPS OF AT LEAST 2 AND NO MORE THAN 4. Y OU GROUP IS A FAMILY AND MUST DESIGN A SHIELD TO BE USED. Y OU HAVE TO TOOLS TO DO THIS.
