11.  The current rank structure of the Navy has evolved since its birth on October 13, 1775.  The rank of Admiral did not come about until 1862 when Congress authorized nine Rear Admirals on July 16.  The eagle as a rank insignia for Captain first appeared in 1852.

12.  The rank below Lieutenant evolved from Sailing Master, later Master, to Warrant Officer.  The Petty Officer can trace his title back to the old French word petit meaning something small.
