13 The significance of Laken Litman ending her article with Ma’ake turning to Chris and saying “I love you, man” is to show how the brothers learned to appreciate each other during this crisis. Litman describes how the brothers grew up in a “tough family. A family that rarely said, ‘I love you’ not because they didn’t have feelings, that’s just how it was.” After Chris’s kidney transplant, the brothers realized that family is not about being tough. They realized that family is about letting the other person know how much you love them because you never know when you might lose them.
