1. Balfron High School Standard Grade Music Standard Grade Music will be offered for the last time in session 2007-2008

2. Why Study Music?  Music makes a valuable contribution to your general education.  Studying music contributes to your personal development by providing you with the opportunity to develop interests that will enhance your quality of life.  Music allows you to develop the skills and knowledge required if you wish to proceed to further study and/or follow a career in, or related to, music.

3. The aims of Standard Grade Music:  Give everyone an opportunity to study music as part of a general education, and develop areas of personal interest.  Provide opportunities to develop musical skills in performing, listening and inventing.  Provide a basis for those who want to follow a career in, or related to, music.

4. Standard Grade Music is offered at three levels:  Foundation  General  Credit

5. Standard Grade Music involves a study of four musical elements: 11 st Study - Solo Performing 22 nd Study - Performing LListening IInventing

6. 1 st Study - Solo Performing: Play an instrument (or sing).This will be your main instrument or “1 st study”. Perform a programme of pieces, totalling between 4-10 minutes, to a visiting examiner.

7. 2 nd Study - Performing: Play (or sing) a different instrument, either solo or as part of a group. This will be your “2 nd study”. Record examples of your 2 nd Study performing in class. You will be awarded your best grade.

8. Listening: Listen to music from a wide variety of musical styles and periods, learning to identify appropriate concepts. Written tests based on recorded excerpts of music.

9. Inventing: Compose, improvise and/or arrange your own music. Record examples of your inventing in class. You will be awarded your best grade.
