Lesson 8-7 Applications of Right Triangle Trigonometry (page 317) How can trigonometry be used to solve real life problems?

horizontal 1 2 B A The angles formed between the horizontal and the line of sight are the: ANGLE of DEPRESSION when a point B is viewed from a higher point A, ie. ____. ∠1∠1 l i n e o f s i g h t

horizontal 1 2 B A The angles formed between the horizontal and the line of sight are the: ANGLE of ELEVATION when a point A is viewed from a lower point B, ie. ____. ∠2∠2 l i n e o f s i g h t
5
horizontal l i n e o f s i g h t Angle of Elevation l i n e o f s i g h t Angle of Depression
6
6’6’ 3’3’ Example 1 At a certain time, a post 6 feet tall casts a 3 feet shadow. What is the angle of elevation of the sun? xº
7
6’6’ 3’3’ See the right triangle. xº ∴ the angle of elevation of the sun is 63º.
8
Example 2 A person in a lighthouse 22 meters above sea level sights a boat in the water. If the angle of depression to the boat is 25º, how far from the base of the lighthouse is the boat? 25º ? m 22m
9
The goal is to get a right triangle! See the right triangle! 25º ? m 22m
10
Now use trigonometry. 25º X m 22m ➤ ➤ 25º or 90º - 25º = 65º
11
Solve either equation, they both give the same solution … ∴ the boat is 47 meters from the base of the lighthouse. or
