3 Due Process Section 1. All persons born or naturalized in the United States, and subject to the jurisdiction thereof, are citizens of the United States and of the State wherein they reside. No State shall make or enforce any law which shall abridge the privileges or immunities of citizens of the United States; nor shall any State deprive any person of life, liberty, or property, without due process of law; nor deny to any person within its jurisdiction the equal protection of the laws.

5 Trial Courts 95 district courts (Philadelphia, Scranton, & Pittsburgh) – At least one in each state + one in D.C. – Includes Bankruptcy courts Types of Cases: – U.S. Constitution – Federal statutes – Diversity 3 Special Trial courts – U.S. Court of International Trade – U.S. Court of Federal Claims – US Tax Courts

6 Appellate Courts 94 district courts are organized into 12 regional circuits (11 Circuits + D.C. Circuit) Each Circuit has a Court of Appeals Types of cases: – Appeals from the district courts in its circuit – Appeals from decisions of federal administrative agencies 1 special circuit – the Federal Circuit – Patent cases – Appeals from the Court of International Trade – Appeals form the Court of Federal Claims
