Title (Hamnet) Wolsey's Palace [graphic] / E.H. Fitchew. Date of Creation or Publ. (Hamnet) [between 1880 and 1899?] Physical Description (Hamnet) 1 drawing : ink wash with opaque and pencil indications ; image 120 x 161 mm., on sheet 143 x 203 mm. Subject (Hamnet) Drawings -- 19th century. Subject (Hamnet) Hampton Court (Richmond upon Thames, London, England), depicted. Subject (Hamnet) Periodical illustrations -- 19th century. Subject (Hamnet) Richmond upon Thames (London, England) -- Buildings, structures, etc., depicted. Associated Name (Hamnet) Belcher, John, 1841-1913, former owner. Notes (Hamnet) Artist: Houfe notes Fitchew as a portraitist and illustrator who contributed studies of heads to the English illustrated magazine, 1886. Waters notes him as a watercolor painter living in Bromley. Notes (Hamnet) History: The label glued to the verso and the pencil notes in the margins indicate that the drawing was intended for reproduction in The quiver, a periodical publication published in both London and N.Y. by Cassell between Sept. 1861 and at least Nov. 1897. Illustrations by Fitchew are found in examined issues of the magazine (1893-1896) but the exact date of issue for this illustration remains undetermined. Notes (Hamnet) Provenance: Item was purchased by the Folgers from Thomas Thorp in April of 1927. According to Thorp, he had purchased the drawing from the collection of the architect John Belcher. Notes (Hamnet) Published work: The quiver. London ; New York : Cassell & Co., 1861-. Notes (Hamnet) Subject: Drawing shows the south-west corner of Wolsey's palace. The beginning of the Wren addition to Hampton Court, attached to the palace, is shown in this drawing in pencil only. The drawing includes a view of a garden in the foreground. The palace, located on the banks of the Thames, 15 miles south-west of London, was occupied by Wolsey from 1514-1529. The Wren addition was completed in 1699. Though no date is attached to this drawing, it was probably done in the 1880's or 1890's. Notes (Hamnet) Vignette drawing with pencil notations regarding reproduction in margins. Label glued to verso gives title and artist. Executed on artist's board. Removed from a frame 7/28/49. '423','96/9' and 'Tag 1668' had been written on a removed backing. Signed in lower right of drawing. Call Number (Hamnet) ART Box F546.5 no.1 (size S)
