2 The Beginning Elections held on September 5, 1836. Texas Constitution of 1836 is overwhelmingly approved. Most Texans vote to join the United States.

3 Houston’s First Term Mirabeau Lamar is Vice President. Needed Mexico and other nations to recognize Texas’ Independence. Deep in debt from Revolution. Native Americans still causing problems for settlers.

4 Houston’s First Term Capital & Money Need a new capital: – Columbia is too small and rugged. – Allen brothers suggest “Houston” as a new settlement on Buffalo Bayou (San Jacinto) Deep in Debt: – $1.25 million – increases to $2 million by 1839. – Tariffs – Reduced from four regiments to one. – Issued paper money

5 Houston’s First Term Texas Rangers A small military force is formed to protect the settlers from Native Americans and eventually becomes known as the Texas Rangers. Native Americans – Chief Bowles - Cherokee leader and friend of Sam Houston. – Comanche and Kiowa –especially hostile.

6 Houston’s First Term Cordova Rebellion Tejanos and Native Americans are mad about the Revolution. A tejano named Vicente Cordova plans a rebellion with help from Mexico and Native Americans. Were defeated by a Anglo American volunteer force.

7 Houston’s First Term Annexation Issues Settlers wanted U.S. protection from Mexico. U.S. worried about relations with Mexico. Slavery still a major issue and Texas would be a slave state.

8 Lamar as President Opposite of Houston Opposed Annexation Expansion to the Pacific Ocean Direct conflict with Native Americans. State Capital - Austin

9 Lamar as President New Capital In 1839, the Texas Congress approved a new site for the state Capital and called it Austin. Houston was worried it was too close to the frontier. Lamar used it as base for expansion.

10 Lamar as President Native Americans Lamar sought to remove all Native Americans from Texas. Council House Fight – Comanche ask for Peace Treaty and agreed go meet in San Antonio. – Texas Rangers tried to hold the Comanche hostage and fighting broke out. – Several more skirmishes happened with similar attacks on the Witchita.

11 Lamar as President Texas Navy and Santa Fe Expedition Lamar - expand Texas as an independent country to the Pacific Ocean. A strong military including a Navy was key. – Edwin W. Moore was the head of the Texas Navy. Lamar attempted to annex Santa Fe to Texas from New Mexico, – Disputed territory – Jose Antonio Navarro – sent to invade Santa Fe – Texans were stopped by Mexican Army All of this military expense created more debt for Texas. – $8 million by end of Lamar’s term.

12 Houston’s Second Term Houston announced that he would undo all the damage Lamar did as President. Cut expenses across the board and even tried to sell the Navy. Tried to set up a Peace Policy with the Native Americans.

13 Houston’s Second Term Trouble started brewing with Mexico again. March 1832 – 700 Mexicans invade Texas at San Antonio. – Jack Coffee Hayes Mier Expedition Regulator-Moderator War
