3 APA SIG Small-Grant HPV Vaccination CDC grant to improve HPV vaccination rates Purpose is to develop creative mechanisms to improve HPV vaccination rates RFP issued 12/1/2014 All APA SIGs eligible $5000 maximum award 9 month study time period (April- December, 2015) 2 proposals funded

4 EBP SIG Proposal Title: Teaching Pediatric Residents to Make Stronger Recommendations for HPV Vaccination through their Study of Evidence Based Medicine Authors: Monique Naifeh Bob Jacobson Paul Darden Rachel Boykan

5 EBP SIG Proposal– Our Approach Recruit residency programs via email to program directors and associate program directors using APPD and EBP SIG listserves. Develop 6 modules focused on EBP principles using HPV literature. Modules designed to be delivered in 45min to 1 hour blocks in an interactive format such as resident noon conference Modules complete with facilitators guide and all materials needed to present provided to facilitators. Webinar for facilitators on each topic to assure comfort and competence prior to presentation

6 EBP SIG Proposal– Our Approach Module Topics: 1. Asking an answerable clinical question and searching for the best evidence 2. Applying the hierarchy for study design and assessing a study’s methods for validity 3. Assessing a study’s methods for generalizability 4. Evaluating a study’s quantitative importance including number needed to treat 5. Statistical significance including a discussion of p-values and confidence intervals 6. Applying the evidence you found to your patient

7 EBP SIG Proposal– Our Approach Residents surveyed using pre-post design. Surveys would query resident knowledge, skills, attitudes and practices about HPV vaccination Knowledge of EBM concepts Module facilitators surveyed post program implementation Ease of implementation of the modules Utility of the modules All program materials published on MedEdPORTAL
