3 CORDOVA REBELLION The Córdova Rebellion, in 1839, was an uprising around Nacogdoches, Texas. 4 CORDOVA REBELLION Pres. Houston saw that Cordova was against the Texas Republic and conflict arose between Cordova’s men and Texans. Houston ordered that no one carry weapons in Nacogdoches Cordova didn’t agree along with several Cherokee Cordova and his men were beaten by Gen. 5 TEXAS NAVY Edwin Moore, a US sailor, left the USN to form the Texas Navy Worried that budget cuts might cut back on the navy, he used Texas ships to blockade Mexico to force them to recognize Texas as a nation. Moore sided with Yucatan rebels who were revolting against the Mexican government Pres. Houston ordered the fleet back to Texas Moore at first refused and fought MX ships The fleet was sold and Moore accused of piracy and dismissed from the navy Moore was charged for the cost of his naval battle. http://www.texasmilitaryforcesmuseum. org/articles/texasnavy/texasnavy.htm

7 MARY MAVERICK Witnessed the Comanche negotiation to free prisoners at SA court house. Gunfire erupted inside and the Indians rushed from the building. Several Indians almost kidnapped her own children. 8 MARY MAVERICK AND THE RUNAWAY OF’42 1842 Santa Anna was again president of Mexico. Rumors spread that Santa Anna was going to attack San Antonio The Mavericks fled the city like many and lived in Gonzales Her husband was captured by MX. 9 WILLIAM GOYENS Free Black man who lived in Nacogdoches during the era of slavery. He was a blacksmith, sold wagons and operated a freight line. Often accused of being a runaway slave, he had to go to court to prove his freedom. He convinced the Cherokee to not take sides during the TX Revolt. 10 JOHN COFFEE “JACK” HAYES Born in Tennessee 1817 Joined a TX Ranger company in 1836 1840 appointed a Ranger Captain Fought Indians, Mexican bandits, Anglo outlaws as well as MX troops Fought at Plum Creek, Bandera Pass, Salado and Walker Creek Served as a scout for Gen. 11 JOSE ANTONIO NAVARRO Championed Texas Independence and fought for Tejano rights during the years of the Republic and statehood Friend of SFA and elected to legislature One of three Hispanic signers of the TX Declaration of Independence Was chosen to accompany the Santa Fe Expedition.
