Hitler's approach to education and youth The education system & youth groups Sophiya Thapa and Veera Korpi 14IB 22.2.2016

Hitler: "Your child belongs to us already" (1933) Indoctrination of the German youth to the Nazi movement by -nazifying the school system -establishing youth organizations The NSDAP sought to monopolize the life of the young and to wean them from parental to party control.

A parade of Hitlerjugend in 1936.

The education system Emphasis on sports, biology, history and "Germanics". Teachers had to be members of the National Socialist Teachers' League (NSLB). Teachers with anti-nazi ideologies or Jewish background were thrown out. Special schools for future leaders.

The subjects... Sports → a healthy body will be capable of physical contribution to the nation History → promoted the greatness of Germany's past (this "nationalist bias" was not a new thing) Biology → heavy emphasis on race and the science of improving a population through controlled breeding

"Germanics" → study of language and literature ("culture-producing" race such as Germans VS "culture-destroying" races like Jews) → promotion of nationalism, militarism, sacrifice for the Nazi cause, and devotion to Adolf Hilter

Education of future leaders Adolf-Hitler-Schulen → physical exercise, race purity and obedience to the Führer the Napolas → military discipline and duty to the leader, the party and the nation Ordensburgen → a four-year course on racial science, athletics, and political and military instruction and indoctrination for the future ruling elite

Youth groups Hitler: "I will have no intellectual training. Knowledge is ruin to my young men." The Hitlerjugend (HJ) for boys The Bund Deutscher Mädel (BDM) for girls Later on new, separate movements for 10-14-year-old girls and boys. Existing youth movements were banned (except Catholic youth organizations).

The Hitlerjugend Similar uniforms and the hitlerjugend haircut.

The Bund Deutscher Mädel Similar uniforms and hairstyle. Picture taken in Heidelager, a summer camp

In March 1939 membership became compulsory. Not all, but the great majority of young Germans were recruited. Variety of activities: camping, sport and military training for boys; physical fitness and preparation for marriage and childbearing for girls. Children’s spare time was diminshed. Parents lost control over their children.
