2 Z IKA V IRUS The Zika Virus is not airborne transmissible so only Standard Precautions are required It is primarily transmitted by mosquitoes and, on occasion, through sexual contact or contaminated blood It can be transmitted from a mother to her newborn and has been linked to microcephaly, a rare neurological condition in which an infant's head is significantly smaller.

5 Screen all women ages 12-52: ED and Labor & Delivery Ambulatory primary care and specialty care clinics including urgent care MA or RN screen patient once in room or triage area In the clinic setting minors should be screened by the provider

During your pregnancy did you or your partner travel, or if pregnancy is unknown have you or your partner recently traveled, to Mexico Central or South America Caribbean Cape Verde, or Oceana/Pacific Islands 3. Do you have symptoms? Acute fever, joint pain, rash, sore/red eyes

14 P REVENTION Pregnant women should avoid going to regions where Zika is being transmitted Women thinking of becoming pregnant should consult doctors before going. If their partners travel to these areas women should be advised to use protection (condoms) Travelers to these countries are advised to avoid or minimize mosquito bites Stay in screened or air-conditioned rooms or sleep under mosquito nets Wear insect repellent at all times Pregnant and lactating women can use all Environmental Protection Agency (EPA)-registered insect repellents, including DEET, according to the product label. Wear long pants, long sleeves, shoes and hats.
