Why Focus on Early Childhood Care and Education (ECCE)? Early childhood, care and education critical for school preparedness, retention and improved learning in subsequent grades Right to Education Act recommends ECCE by ‘appropriate Government’for 3-6 year age group Integrated service delivery of pre-school - convergence with elementary education The ECCE Policy 2013

Launching of ECCE Curriculum “Nua Arunima” The revised package was launched on 29 th April 2013 Rolled out across the state – all AWCs /Projects/ Districts

Nua Arunima Curriculum framework Result of extensive consultations, workshops & vetting of materials by experts Developed standardized CURRICULLUM FRAMEWORK Lays down QUALITY STANDARDS Provision for ADEQUATE and APPROPRIATE play material. Child DEVELOPMENTAL MILESTONE monitoring to be conducted in every 3 rd, 6 th, 9 th and 12th month. Provision for comprehensive childcare support, infrastructure and services. Develop capacity and resources of the ICDS functionaries Raise awareness and create common understanding. Recognize diversity of context, develop and promote culturally appropriate strategies.

Curriculum focus More child-centered; Ensured 5 hours of pre school activity in the center. Thematic activities: ◦Me, my family and community ◦Immediate environment ◦Nature and weather ◦Health and safety Building a bridge between home and center Free conversation, action songs, storytelling, play and construction activities and nature walks Emphasis on pre-reading, pre-writing and pre-number skills Inclusive school readiness

The Pre-School Package Handbook for AWW with month-wise activity schedule for 12 months → → Two age appropriate workbooks → → Illustrated daily-plan for the AWC Quarterly age-wise developmental indicators for assessing and demonstrating development in children Monitoring format Training interactive DVDs and Audio CD → → Mobile chip loaded with PSE songs and rhymes given to all AWWs → → Beautification at AWCs based on curricular learning and stimulation All materials available in DWCD website for use by all agencies, individuals and institutions.

The Pre-School Package Uniform Toy bank Fixed Monthly ECCE Day on 19 th of every month Enhancing community participation through celebrating sports day, Bal Mela, Local festivals, Child friendly wall paintings by local artisan and children creation exhibitions etc Funding mechanism - All components of Pre-school package developed from state fund First lot of materials to the children given from state funds Decentralization
