2 - Known as the “first gospel” Longest Gospel Matthew’s gospel was the first book listed in the New Testament Canon Placed first of the four gospels Contains about 80% of Mark’s Gospel Background

3 Why was it printed as the first gospel? - Well ordered and structured - Contains detailed teaching lessons THE BEATITUDES - Contains JESUS’ family TREE!!! Great link between Old and New Testament Background

4 -Written AFTER the gospel of Mark -AFTER THE 9/11 Event of the Temple Destruction in 70 AD -Composed by a Jewish-Christian for a predominantly Jewish-Christian & Gentile (non Jewish-Christian) audience Background

Jesus dies in approx. 30 AD Apostles spread the good news Jews become Christians yet retain Jewish customs and traditions (MIX OF BOTH) Temple is destroyed in 70 AD Gospel of Mark is written around 70 AD Split between Jews & Christians becomes even more recognizable. WHY?

9 Mark - Begins with Jesus’ public ministry - Jesus reluctantly accepted Peter’s confession of him as the Christ - Apostles are slow to understand Jesus is the Messiah - Ends with NO resurrection appearance by Jesus Matthew - Begins with genealogy of Jesus, tracing him to David and Abraham - Next is the infancy narratives - Peter identifies Jesus as Messiah and Son of God. Jesus praises Peter - Apostles understand Jesus is the Messiah after Jesus walks on water - Concludes with 2 resurrection appearances Comparing Mark & Matthew
