Statehood “The Republic of Texas is no more.” – Anson Jones

If at first you don’t succeed... Texans won freedom from Mexico in 1836. only one year later (1837) they voted to apply for annexation The United States voted not to annex the Republic because of slavery and the war that would probably start with Mexico In 1845 Texas again asked to be annexed and this time it was granted. – Controversy Texas would be a slave state and half of the United States wanted to abolish slavery Still afraid of causing a war with Mexico

Manifest = become clear to understand Destiny = the future that inevitable The United States believed that it was their destiny to expand from sea to shining sea and Texas was part of that expansion Manifest Destiny Texas was $10million in debt but sold land to the United States that amount to become debt free! Many Texans had come from the United States and were happy to become part of their mother country again Annexation Win - Win situation

“All hail our mighty state…” After Texas became part of the United States there was a BIG immigration into our state! Mexican – Settled mostly in the south and west Laredo, El Paso, Brownsville, Corpus Christi Anglo – Settled mostly in the east German – Settled mostly in the south-east San Antonio, New Braunfels, Houston, Fredericksburg Irish – Settled in the south-east Refugio, Dublin Norwegian – Settled mostly in North Texas East of Dallas, Nacogdoches, Tyler,

We all have ISSUES Slavery – Many people who lived in the Northern states of the United States were against Texas’s annexation because they opposed slavery – Southern states wanted to annex Texas because it would give Slave states more power. – Most of the slavery in Texas was in the south and east because that’s where all the good farm land was (the West was mainly Native Texans)
7
Mexican border – Mexico refused to acknowledge that Texas had won independence and even though we had a signed treaty they still claimed Texas belonged to Mexico – If another country recognized Texas as independent they became Mexico’s enemy – Annexing Texas caused a war Texas belonged to Mexico Border dispute – Mexico claimed the Nueces river – Treaty of Velasco established Rio Grande We all have ISSUES

Mexican-American War General Zachery Taylor (later became President of the United States) was stationed along the Texas border Shots were fired by both sides in the disputed border territory The United States declared war “American blood has been shed on American soil” – James K. Polk Thousands of Texans volunteered to fight! – Many Texans were anxious to go to war with Mexico to avenge poor treatment (still remembered the Alamo) and settle the border dispute. General Taylor easily won the war and marched all the way to Mexico City
9
Treaty of Guadalupe-Hidalgo Ended the Mexican War February 2, 1848 Mexico agreed that Texas was now part of the United States and surrendered land between Texas and the Pacific Ocean The United States paid Mexico $15million for this land – California, New Mexico, Arizona, Nevada, Wyoming, Utah, and Colorado

Mine, Mine, Mine Texas /New Mexico boundary dispute – Texas felt the Rio Grande started in Colorado and that territory should belong to Texas. – New Mexico did not want to be part of Texas – United States established the Texas-New Mexico boundary act Awarded Texas $10 million for territories they gave up Determined the Western boundary of Texas in the Compromise of 1850 Limited Texas borders so that it could admit other states as Free States (non-slave) http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_detailpage&v=feTytlRd2KY#t=163s
