Fluency Builder ---- 10 minutes Let’s look at some common phrases used in today’s dialogue that you can use when you’re stuck in a disagreement. These will help you sound more natural, polite and professional! #1. I see things a bit differently. This expression is a great one to show that you have heard what the other person is saying and that you understand (to a degree), but that you don’t exactly agree. Beginning your statement with a phrase like this is much more polite than just going straight in to your argument. #2. I appreciate your point of view. This is another great phrase with a similar affect. A “point of view” is someone’s opinion, attitude or way of thinking. This expression shows that you understand, acknowledge and appreciate their thoughts and ideas. From there, you can agree or disagree. Another polite way to engage in a disagreement!

Saying “sorry” in this context is more like an interjection than a true apology or pity for someone. It’s a quick expression of regret, used quite casually. It’s often used when beginning an argument though. #4. The point I’m making is… A “point” here is like an argument, goal, intention, motive or objective. It’s like the details of someone’s point of view. We often say this phrase when we feel that we need to clarify ourselves or specify a particular thing. If an argument continues on and on or goes in many directions, sometimes you might feel the need to return to your original, most important opinion (or point). This is when we would say, “Ok, but the point I am making here is….”. #5. Let’s calm down and work together. This is simply a kind, genuine, polite way to ease any possible tension! The key to a successful argument is cooperation, so everyone should always try to work together!

Don't get me wrong but, … Even so, if… Don't forget that… Very true, but...
