Workshop Objectives Develop an understanding of the purpose of appraisal, its relationship with revalidation, Review professional responsibilities of the appraiser and the skills required to facilitate the appraisal process Share good practice in relation to facilitating the appraisal discussion To practice the role of the appraiser

Preparation Read personal information, job description, job plan and previous PDP Review the content of their appraisal material over the appraisal period Consider whether the core information is provided, and whether it meets defined standards for appraisal and revalidation Prepare relevant feedback and plan questions aiming to facilitate self-challenge and future development needs Begin to write the summary – grouping similar entries Demonstration video of writing up the appraisal

Practicalities of the Appraisal Ask for reflection, not just description; and quality, not quantity Clarify what has been learned and how this has, or could be, put into practice Query why activities were undertaken or learning approaches used, and encourage exploration of options Focus on action points and learning needs, think about whether these should be included in the PDP and how they might be achieved

Outputs: Appraisal summary At least 4-6 anonymised entries recorded in some detail, other entries briefly Similar entries can be grouped together Future appraisers and the RO/MD can view the summary Write in you own words, but retain the sense of the entry Write in the third person BW ABR (beware of abbreviations)

Personal Development Plan (PDP) Key output for the individual, must be agreed with and owned by the appraisee Derived from needs identified during the appraisal and the doctor’s role including job plan Should take account of personal, team, organisational and service level objectives Must be realistic and take account of recognised constraints.
