Roots of Buddhism (Preview) Religious unrest on subcontinent Siddhartha’s search Enlightenment of the Buddha Effect: Followers establish Buddhism What contributed to the establishment of Buddhism?

Life of the Buddha (page 234) The story of Siddhartha’s birth and childhood is a legend. A man named Siddhartha Gautama actually did live on the Indian subcontinent from 563-483 BC. He wandered over the countryside seeking new ideas to live by. He established Buddhism, one of the world’s major religions.

Siddhartha’s Search His search took place at a time of religious unrest. Many were seeking answers to spiritual questions. People started to doubt the need for priests’ Vedic rituals and animal sacrifices. Seekers of truth were a common sight on Indian roads in those days.

Siddhartha’s Search Buddhist writings from oral tradition tell us about Siddhartha’s search. He wore a simple yellow robe and owned nothing but a small bowl. To stay alive he accepted rice that people offered.

Siddhartha’s Search He traveled about, seeking answers given by religious leaders of the time. He decided to look within himself. Sitting in the shade of a fig tree, he vowed not to leave until he found his answers.

Siddhartha’s Search He sat in meditation (thinking about spiritual matters) for 49 days. On the 49 th day Siddhartha found the truth he was seeking. He found a way to escape suffering. Understanding has flooded his mind like a great light. From this time on, he was called the Buddha. This title meant enlightened one. Siddhartha had reached the height of understanding called enlightenment.

Enlightenment of the Buddha

The Peaceful Road The Buddha then began to preach, speaking to 5 followers in a park near Sarnath. Within days, 60 followers joined him. He sent them in all directions to spread the Buddhist dharma, the law or teachings. Buddha traveled and taught where ever people would listen. He lived his days in peace, teaching and preaching until his death at the age of 80.
