Unit 6: Building Technology in Construction Learning Outcome Understand the implications of the issues and constraints on building construction Lesson Objective To be able to explain the constraints that planning and building regulations have on construction

Unit 6: Building Technology in Construction Planning Permission Development of building standards https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rpsYcV 6JT8g

Unit 6: Building Technology in Construction Planning Permission Development of building standards http://www.planningportal.gov.uk/planning/

Unit 6: Building Technology in Construction Planning Permission This is permission to “develop” the land for a given use. What is development? It is not permission to build! Two applications: outline or full, valid for 5 years Determining criteria are, size location, use, aesthetics, privacy etc. Neighbours are informed and may object to your proposal May be determined by a democratic process where councillors will vote on the officer’s recommendations. Appeals made to Secretary of State or WAG in Wales Development of building standards

Unit 6: Building Technology in Construction Building Regulations Legislation 2010 Building Regulations are a set of requirements laid down by Parliament to ensure that building work is carried out to approved standards. What do you think they include? The health, safety and welfare of people in and around buildings. The conservation of fuel and energy within buildings. Ease of access and facilities for disabled people in public and commercial buildings. Fire safety and means of escape from buildings. L04: Understand the implications of the issues and constraints on building construction

Unit 6: Building Technology in Construction Building Regulations Legislation 2010 This is permission to build. What sort of developments are covered? The Building Regulations cover a wide range of building work from major office, shop and residential developments to small domestic works like extensions, through lounges and loft conversions. L04: Understand the implications of the issues and constraints on building construction

Unit 6: Building Technology in Construction Part A – Structure Part B – Fire safety – Volume 1: Dwelling houses – Volume 2: Buildings other than dwelling houses Part C – Site preparation and resistance to contaminates and moisture Part D – Toxic substances Part E – Resistance to the passage of sound Part F – Ventilation Part G – Hygiene Part H – drainage and waste disposal Part J – Combustion appliances and fuel storage systems Part K – Protection from falling collision and impact Part L –L1A: Conservation of fuel and power (New dwellings) L1B: Conservation of fuel and power (Existing dwellings) L2A: Conservation of fuel and power (New buildings other than dwellings) L2B: Conservation of fuel and power (Existing buildings other than dwellings) Part M – Access to and Use of Buildings Part N – Glazing Part P– Electrical safety - Dwellings Approved Documents

Unit 6: Building Technology in Construction The Building Regulations set of Approved Documents Welsh Government Building Regulation Guidance: - http://wales.gov.uk/topics/planning/buildingregs/publications/?lang=en Always go to the source documents! Remember that Wales and England are now diverging. L04: Understand the implications of the issues and constraints on building construction

Unit 6: Building Technology in Construction Approved Document M (Access to and use of buildings) Review the excerpt from the approved document and answer the following questions. Note the clause reference or diagram number where you found the information. 1.When does the approach from a building to the car park need a ramp? 2.What are the size of passing places that need to be provided from the car park to the building? 3.What is the size of a disabled parking bay? 4.What is the maximum ramp rise with a gradient of 1:15? 5.What should occur at the top and bottom of external steps? 6.What is the maximum overlap of a nosing on an external step? 7.Draw a sketch to show the dimensional requirements of a handrail. L04: Understand the implications of the issues and constraints on building construction

Unit 6: Building Technology in Construction Learning Outcome Understand the implications of the issues and constraints on building construction Lesson Objective To be able to explain the constraints that Health and Safety have on building construction

Unit 6: Building Technology in Construction The Health and Safety at Work Act 1974 Often abbreviated to HASAWA Is the Main Statutory Regulation covering the health and safety of all persons at their place of work. L04: Understand the implications of the issues and constraints on building construction

Unit 6: Building Technology in Construction This regulation replace previous piecemeal laws and unites them under one all encompassing umbrella It places the responsibility for health & safety on: Employers, and Employees ( that’s YOU) L04: Understand the implications of the issues and constraints on building construction

Unit 6: Building Technology in Construction What are the main objectives of HASAWA are: To secure the health, safety and welfare of all persons at work. To protect the general public from risk to health and safety arising out of work activity To control the use, handling, storage and transportation of explosives and highly flammable substances To control the release of noxious or offensive substances into the atmosphere L04: Understand the implications of the issues and constraints on building construction

Unit 6: Building Technology in Construction Who is The Health & Safety at Work Act is enforced by? The Health & Safety Executive Often abbreviated to HSE L04: Understand the implications of the issues and constraints on building construction

Unit 6: Building Technology in Construction What are the duties of the Employer under HSAWA? Provide and maintain a safe working environment Provide safe tools and machinery Provide PPE Provide training information and supervision L04: Understand the implications of the issues and constraints on building construction

Unit 6: Building Technology in Construction What actions are required by an employer in order to comply with safety legislation? Display notices and Certificates Keep Records Notify relevant authorities L04: Understand the implications of the issues and constraints on building construction

Unit 6: Building Technology in Construction What are the duties of the Employee (Workers)? To wear equipment and safeguards provided by the employer. To take care at all times to ensure that their actions do not put at risk (A) themselves, (B) their workmates or (C) any other person. You must Report to the site office before entering the site: In case of an emergency Available for work Accounted in case of fire Safe to enter particular areas If you observe an unauthorised person entering the site You are required to: Escort them to the site office Ask then to leave the site L04: Understand the implications of the issues and constraints on building construction

Unit 6: Building Technology in Construction Site Security Should be give high priority: WHY? To prevent theft To prevent vandalism To protect intruders from hazard To protect the public L04: Understand the implications of the issues and constraints on building construction

Unit 6: Building Technology in Construction What methods are used to provide security? Erect Fencing / hoarding Employ security staff Store tools and equipment in locked storage Install cameras on site Erect secure storage compound L04: Understand the implications of the issues and constraints on building construction

Unit 6: Building Technology in Construction L04: Understand the implications of the issues and constraints on building construction Complete H&S worksheet

Unit 6: Building Technology in Construction Learning Outcome Understand the implications of the issues and constraints on building construction Lesson Objective To be able to explain the different plant required in building construction

Unit 6: Building Technology in Construction Scaffolding What is the purpose of scaffolding? It is a requirement of the Work at Height Regulations 2005. Scaffold design What does it consist of? L04: Understand the implications of the issues and constraints on building construction

Unit 6: Building Technology in Construction 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. 6. 7. 8. 9. L04: Understand the implications of the issues and constraints on building construction

Unit 6: Building Technology in Construction L04: Understand the implications of the issues and constraints on building construction

Unit 6: Building Technology in Construction Scaffolding In groups discuss and list the information that you think the scaffolding contractor will require to design the scaffold? site location period of time the scaffold is required to be in place intended use height and length and any critical dimensions which may affect the scaffold number of boarded lifts maximum working loads to be imposed and maximum number of people using the scaffold at any one time type of access onto the scaffold eg staircase, ladder bay, external ladders whether there is a requirement for sheeting, netting or brickguards any specific requirements or provisions eg pedestrian walkway, restriction on tie locations, inclusion/provision for mechanical handling plant eg hoist) nature of the ground conditions or supporting structure L04: Understand the implications of the issues and constraints on building construction

Unit 6: Building Technology in Construction Scaffolding You should refer to the HSE publications on scaffolding for detailed requirements http://www.hse.gov.uk/construction/safetyto pics/scaffoldinginfo.htm L04: Understand the implications of the issues and constraints on building construction
