Sailboat Types A sloop has one mast and two sails, a jib and a mainsail.

Sailboat Types A ketch has two masts, the main and the mizzenmast, the mizzenmast being the shorter of the two and aft of the main mast. A ketch has three or four sails.

Sailboat Types A schooner has two masts with the taller main mast in the aft position. This aftermast carries the mainsail. A schooner has three or four sails.

Sailboat Types A yawl has two masts, with the mizzenmast much shorter and set aft of the rudder post. A yawl has three or four sails. The mizzenmast is much shorter than on a ketch.

Sailboat Types A catamaran is distinguished from other boat types by its two hulls. A catamaran has one mast, and one or two sails depending on the boat size. They generally are flat bottomed with fin keels or a centerboard.

Your Group Will: Choose a Sailboat Every group will have 2 minutes to look at the sailboat at their table. If you want to keep that boat, do not pass it along. If you do NOT want that boat, pass it along to the next group after 2 minutes! You have 20 minutes to choose a boat!

Each Person Will: Draw their sailboat on a piece of paper: Label the following: Main mast and Mizzen Mast if there is one BowCockpit SternKeel PortMainsail StarboardJib Three Colors! Write down the following specifications for their boat: LOA = Length Overall LWL = Length at the Water Line Beam Draft (minimum and maximum, if applicable) Type of keel Maximum Speed
