Glossary Write the following vocabulary words and definitions in your glossary. Lender – atoms with 1, 2, or 3 electrons in the outer shell. Give away electrons to other atoms. Borrower – atoms with 5, 6 or 7 electrons in the outer shell. Take electrons from other atoms. Subscript – a number written below and behind a symbol in a formula. Ex. H 2

Cont. to add to Glossary Molecule – A group of atoms held together by covalent bonds. Compound – Two or more elements chemically combined. Oxidation Number – The number of electrons an atom lends, borrows or shares. Covalent Bonds – A bond formed when electrons are shared.

Cont. to add to Glossary Ionic Bond – A bond formed when electrons are transferred. Ion – A charged atom. Can be either a positive ion or a negative ion. Chemical Formula – Symbols and numbers showing the elements and number of atoms in a molecule or compound.

Writing Formulas On a new sheet of paper write down the following compounds and formulas. Show your work. Potassium Iodide Silver Bromide Lithium Chloride Zinc Sulfide Aluminum Flouride Hydrogen Bromide

Writing Chemical Names Write down the following formulas and find their compound names. Hint: second word always ends in ide. KCl CaBr 2 ZnO AlCl 3 MgO K 2 S PbS Fe 2 O 3 AgCl CuCl 2
