ARGUMENT & THEME: Comparing Animal Farm to 1984 ARGUMENT = ARGUMENT = An author’s position on a subject supported by evidence (statistics, examples, stories, etc.) Animal Farm Animal Farm = George Orwell’s argument is that workers are exploited by the owners, but they have to be careful when they rebel because they can be exploited by other workers who want more power. 1984 1984 = George Orwell’s argument is that citizens are exploited by their government, but they have to be careful when they rebel because their government has control over information and can manipulate people’s minds as to what is right and what is wrong. PRE-READING: Characterization, Communism and Animal Farm Communism Communism was a political system where one group had control over the political, social, and economic lives of the people who lived in that country. The original goal was “equality.” Animal Farm Animal Farm by George Orwell tells the story of events of how Russia became the Communist Soviet Union, but it uses animals to tell the story. QUESTIONS QUESTIONS: Who is the protagonist / hero of the story? Who is the villain? How do you know? How are they characterized (directly & indirectly)?

DUE FRIDAY: QUARTER 1 BOOK SUMMARY NAME_______ BLOCK_______ DATE_______ QUARTER 1 BOOK SUMMARY The book titled War Horse written by Michael Morpurgeo is the story of a horse named Joey who wants to stay with his mother (and later with his young male owner) but instead is sold to an Army captain to pay off a farmer’s debts. Joey becomes a war horse and accompanies his rider into many battles. He even becomes a horse for a German officer once his rider is killed. In this story Joey is at first characterized as shy, nervous, and not willing to work. This is show when he doesn’t want to plow a field and has to be trained to do it. By the end of the book he is characterized as a heroic horse who saves his rider in battle and helps out his fellow war horses. Through the events in this story it is seen how Joey changes from a timid horse who wants to stay with his mother into a heroic horse who is eventually reunited with the boy who first owned him.
