What is a thesis driven paper? A Thesis driven paper is making an argument (thesis statement) and proving it with evidence. In this case, you will be arguing about a certain point relating to Vietnam. It will be your job to prove the point you are trying to make with the primary sources provided or found on your own. Thesis driven papers start with an introduction Last sentence of intro should be your thesis statement, or argument. It can be argued… The body is used to prove your argument through quotes (evidence) from the primary sources. Use MLA format to cite your work. Works Cited page for sources used. If you do outside research via secondary sources make sure to cite these sources. Proofread…does it make sense???
13
Process Step 1: Skim the documents on the website, there are ~20 covering a variety of topics. Select the one that interests you the most. Read and annotate. What does this document tell you about the time period? About what is going on? What can you argue?? Step 2: Find 2 additional sources that relate to your topic in some way. These sources may be from the collection I provided or PRIMARY SOURCES you locate on your own. What connection do these sources have with your 1 st source? Has it changed your perspective? Your argument/thesis?? Do not force an argument, let the documents do the talking and tell the story…
14
Process, cont’d Step 3: Do additional research via secondary sources (books, websites, etc.) to obtain necessary background information. This will help place your documents in context and make sure you are interpreting them in the correct historical context. Step 4: Craft thesis statement: It can be argued… Find supporting evidence in all three documents. Step 5: Outline Paper Write Proofread, PROOFREAD, Proofread Have a friend, family member, teacher, etc. PROOFREAD!!! Revise!!
