Horticulture: A Part of Plant Science Plant science: the science and technology of the production of crops. Crop: any plant used by human beings.

Areas of Plant Science Agronomy: field crops, wheat, corn, soybeans Horticulture: fruits, vegetables, landscaping, floriculture, etc. Forestry: wood and pulp production, recreation, wildlife and watershed management Weed science: controlling and management of unwanted plants

Origination of Crops Southwestern and central Asia Mediterranean region Southeastern Asia Highlands of tropical America Why is this important to know? –Research can use the plant’s origin to improve its genetics

What is Horticulture? A branch of agricultural plant science. Originates from two Latin words: –“Hortus” meaning garden –“Culturea” meaning cultivation Horticulture = Garden Cultivation Deals with the production of fruits, vegetables, turfgrass, & ornamentals
