Raider Rev-up: When H 2 reacts with O 2 to make H 2 O they do so according to this chemical equation: 2H 2 + O 2 → 2H 2 O. How much water is produced from 10.9 g of H 2 reacting with 96.0 g of O 2 ?

If the actual yield is 21.0 g of H 2 O then what is the percent yield? –Actual yield is what is actually produced in the lab experiment. –Theoretical yield is what the stoichiometry says we can produce (the maximum). Remember we can only produce as much as the limiting reactant allows us to!

Raider Rev-up: What are the safety concerns for the lab today?
9
Raider Rev-up Pre-AP: What is the balanced chemical reaction for the limiting reagent lab?
10
Raider Rev-up: Why is percent yield important?
11
When the actual yield and the theoretical yield are equal, the reaction is said to “go to completion.” Often, reactions don’t go to completion. Why? –Side reactions –Poor lab technique or non-ideal conditions –Equilibrium – for reversible reactions, the forward reaction proceeds at the same rate as the reverse reaction

Given the reaction: C 3 H 7 COOH + CH 3 OH C 3 H 7 COOCH 3 + H 2 O What mass of methyl butanoate is produced from the reaction of 52.5g of butanoic acid? What mass of methyl butanoate is produced from the reaction of 5800g of methanol? If the you produce 57g of butanoic acid in the lab, what is the percent yield of butanoic acid?
